Yaka Slit Drum

Yaka Slit Drum

Among the Yaka people this instrument is both a symbol and an implement of the ngaanga ngoombu diviner whose image it may represent. The central hair crest stretching from front to back is said to be modeled after a hair style, and the downcast eyes are a sign of the diviner's inner vision - Met Museum. This drum has a honey patina from much use of conjuring spirits.
