Necklace and pendant. Duruma. Kenya. No 47. X.T.1. Original list: "Duruma. Necklace. Leather, iron, beads, cowrie shells. Witchdoctor". Twisted iron necklace on which is threaded a rectangular leather pendant decorated with cowries, red glass beads and fringes with iron beads. A finer leather cord, juxtaposed with the fringes, has two pearls and a cowrie. These necklaces are worn as amulets by sorcerer-healers. "Finally a woman witch doctor came to be painted; she was loaded with charms and cowries (220) .These women are considered to be as powerfull as their male colleagues and the people are in awe of them" (Adamson. 1967: 320)
