Shield
Shield. Luo. Kenya. No 97. XI.R.3. Original list: "Luo, Shield. Leather, wood, kaolin, buffalo leather. Man, warrior, elder". Large oval-shaped shield, in skin (buffalo skin?), Brown, with beige patterns. The skin is stretched and then fixed on a wooden frame by means of leather ties. The vertical axis, inside the shield, forms a handle in its center, for gripping the assembly. The outer surface of the shield has a symmetrical composition of hollow grooves coated with kaolin. An ornament in the center, ovoid in shape and slightly domed, has remains of ocher pigments. See "Samia warrior" in J. Adamson. 1967: 174.
