Container. Meru. Kenya. No 28. XI.W.3. Handwritten note: "Circumcision box". Original list: "Imenti. Container. Leather, beads, elephant ivory. Witchdoctor" Oblong box, made from an elephant tusk section covered with skin in the lower part and endowed with a cap in leather whose surface is entirely covered with small blue, orange, white, green and red glass beads. The beading forms a wheel motif on the top of the cap. The leather pieces are flanked by metal handles (iron, copper) through which a copper chain has been used for gripping the object. The boxes of this type were probably handled by the sorcerer healers. See similar object not captioned in A. Fedders and C. Salvadori. 1980: 131.
